Ballet Fantastique

"Poised to become one of Oregon’s leading contemporary ballet companies..."
—Ruby McConnell, Lane Monthly Magazine

Ballet Fantastique accepts Northwest, national, and international company audition applications throughout the year for company and apprentice/trainee positions. We seek dancers with strong technical proficiency and powerful artistry. A Vaganova background is a plus, though not required.

Please see 2017 auditions schedule/tour and video audition guidelines, below.

Our vision. In today's world, we believe that it is no longer enough to be “simply” a dance company in the mold of generations of dance companies gone before. Instead, Ballet Fantastique operates under the belief that companies must be powerfully energetic and versatile—committed to building new audiences for the arts—just as they are profoundly invested—committed to working together to do what it takes to bring world-class art into being. And so, we are artistically bold and unapologetically tenacious, carving new niches for our art and building passionate new audiences for dance in the process. We are refreshingly humble, recognizing that each of us is an essential and contributing member of the team who makes possible the work that we do. We have fierce artistic integrity, but we are also open. We strive to continuously improve.

Just so, Ballet Fantastique believes that it is no longer enough to be “simply” a dancer. We seek a new company members eager to grow as we grow, contributing to and accelerating the success of the organization we share. We seek new company members with talent, strength, artistic voice, a great work ethic and sense of humor, personality, and an insatiable appetite for what's next.

Online Auditions Process

As a small company, every dancer on our roster plays an important role in our identity. We want to know who you are, what you have to contribute, and why you want to dance with Ballet Fantastique.

This February 2014 Pointe Magazine article, "The Immersive Audition," summarizes Ballet Fantastique's philosophy and explains what we try to gain in our unique approach to finding the next perfect dancer and personality match for our bold, kind, tight-knit group.

Online applicants, here's what we need from you:

Audition Process Part I:

Email (preferred) or mail us the following ( or ATTN: Andrew King, 960 Oak, Eugene, OR 97401).

  • Brief cover letter.
  • Dance resume with references. Be sure to list variations (classical and contemporary) you have performed. If you have teaching and/or outreach experience, please include this as well, including syllabus/level/ages taught, the locations you have worked as a dance instructor and the duration of the position.
  • Complete Ballet Fantastique Audition Form.
  • Link to your online video demo reel, classwork (basic barre and center work, including adagio, pirouettes, petit allegro, and grande allegro, set to classroom music). Women should include pointe work. Your video reel should also include between 1-3 performance variations (classical and contemporary), and choreographic samples, if available. The length is up to you, so show us your best work and a range of strengths. NOTE: Because we are a dance theater company and we perform extensive narrative work from playful to tragic, we love to see you in variations that show your dramatic prowess, range, and stage presence.
  • Dance photos (full-body; poses of your choice) and headshot photo.

PLEASE NOTE: Audition application materials will not be returned.

Audition Process Part II:

Choreographer-Producers Donna Marisa and Hannah Bontrager review all Ballet Fantastique Audition Process Part I candidates and identify a short list of top finalists, usually no later than the early spring of each year. These candidates will be invited to participate in Ballet Fantastique's Audition Process Part II:

  • Ballet Fantastique will contact you regarding your status as a finalist.
  • Artistic Director Donna Marisa Bontrager will hand-select a piece of original Ballet Fantastique repertoire for you to learn (typically 1-3 minutes) to show your abilities to work within our range and unique work. Ballet Fantastique will email you a link to a video of this choreography.
  • You will be asked to provide Ballet Fantastique with at minimum 1-2 letters of recommendation.
  • You will be invited to schedule a company class immersive audition/visit at Ballet Fantastique's beautiful studios, during which we will spend 1-2 days with you. You will take a Vaganova company class with us (including pointe work for women), understudy a rehearsal for a current project, have lunch or dinner with a few of our dancers, and "perform" your assigned choreography for Donna and Hannah. On occasion, when a new dancer is also being considered for a teaching position, we will also ask you to teach a class for a group of our Academy students. We will work with you to schedule this visit.
  • NOTE: In special circumstances, we do allow dancers to email us a video link to their Ballet Fantastique choreography assignment if they you feel that you are absolutely unable to visit us in person. In these cases, dancers will be asked to complete Part II: Choreography Assignment within two weeks
  • Positions with Ballet Fantastique tend to be very competitive. As a result, we ask that if you no longer wish to be considered as a finalist, you let us know so that we can offer a finalist position to another qualified dancer.
