Tales from the Floating World
Donna and Hannah Bontrager, choreographer-producers

“Living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves; singing songs, drinking wine, diverting ourselves in just floating, floating; refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current: this is what we call the floating world.” —Poet Asai Ryoui (17th century)

Ballet Fantastique’s NEW LEGENDS season continues with Tales from the Floating World, a landmark contemporary ballet premiere inspired by the haunting and powerful music of Portland Taiko and live koto player Mitsuki Dazai. Partnering with the award-winning ensemble drummers, choreographer-producers Donna Marisa and Hannah Bontrager bring to life ancient Asian legends of samurai adventure, romance, and the supernatural.
Tales from the Floating World fuses fierce rhythm and indelible melody with evocative movement, weaving together the sounds of the ancient past to tell epic stories from a world of caprice.
